I’m still docked in Melbourne. And now I need a part-time job in order to fund my ever-growing garden. There are just so many bulbs and flowers that I want to get to put on the deck. I’ve discovered that I have a particularly expensive taste in flowers. I love the orchards that are upwards of a hundred dollars per bulb. Anyway, it makes for a pretty great boat.
Although Melbourne is not as green and forested than Tasmania , there’s still a lot of arborists Melbourne wide. Although I’ve never done tree surgery before, I spent my entire childhood climbing trees. Back then I dreaded the thought of working in an office all day. After high school, the options that were presented to me were unacceptable. That’s why I ended up getting a boat and sailing around the world. I need to keep active you know. Now that I’m stuck in my boat all day, I need to get out. Arboriculture is the perfect contractor job for that.
I got a job offer from an old friend of mine who used to be a massive greenie. In fact he was a member of the Animal liberation front in the nineties. He used to chain himself to old growth trees and face off with the logging trucks. Now he’s tree lopping for a living! Arboriculture is very different to logging of course, arborists cut down trees sure, but they know the correct methods to cultivate and preserve them too. That’s what I learnt from him anyway: that logging is not the same thing as tree felling. Melbourne has a lot of green living culture and different movements that support sustainability and the environment. We’re looking to the future.
I’m looking forward to my stint as an arborist, however I” just hope I don’t fall out of the tree.
