I know you’re going to think I’m a horrible person for saying this but my son is turning into a weirdo. He’s at that age where kids start to develop their own unique personality…. and let’s just say his certainly is “unique”. He doesn’t enjoy the company of other children and keeps to himself, inventing little games for himself. I’ve frequently caught him in the middle of strange activities, like hide and seek with an imaginary friend or speaking in unknown languages. Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for being an individual and having a vivid imagination, but sometimes his little games give me the creeps. I’m truly afraid of how he’s turning out.
This situation seemed manageable until last weekend when I realised how serious his eccentricity could potentially be. We’d been having some troubles at home with termite control. Frankston has a lot of old properties like ours that have had termites in the basement so we had to call the pest control company to come out. While the guy was inspecting the damage, my son and I looked on in awe of the mud trails and rotted beams. My son showed an unusually keen interest in the insects – I noticed it then and there, but little did I expect what was to come next. When the man went out to collect some of his equipment from the truck and I had turned my back briefly, my son was sitting on the floor putting the little critters into his mouth. I was so shocked that I slapped his little hand away and he looked up at me, bewildered.
I don’t know how to discourage him from these strange behaviours. Soon we’ll be renting out this property and moving to another in dandenong, pest control hopefully won’t be a problem there, but still, if I can’t leave him alone just for a minute, who knows what he’ll put in his mouth. Please help!
