My dad has always wanted me to love his boat like he does. Don’t get me wrong I do like it I just don’t feel as passionately about it as he does. I mean the man watches his marine trailer repairs being done like it’s a sport. He is always asking me to go with him to help sand down the hull or repaint the outboard or something. I mean I love a day out on the water but I just don’t feel the need to be involved in every aspect of boat maintenance. It actually resulted in me snapping at him a few weeks ago. He just doesn’t get that I am a different person and my interests aren’t exactly the same as his. Much in the same way that I appreciate he probably isn’t that interested in the latest hip-hop releases, I thought he could understand the boat is his thing. Anyway I felt bad because I did kind of shout at him and at the end of the day he is only trying to spend time with me. I just wish it was more on my terms. I decided to go down to the coast and see the boat with him. He wanted to see how his latest gadget was, he had a new anchor winch in Melbourne installed and hadn’t actually used it on the water yet. I said as long as we actually take the boat out I am there. He had an electric anchor winch put in which did make the whole process much easier, it was normally my job to haul the metal anchor overboard but now it was as simple as a push of the button. It was a pretty nice day and I told my Dad if he wasn’t so pushy about the boat I would probably spend more time with him on it.
