We had one of those weekends where we were just flat out. I don’t think I sat down for more than 5 minutes all day. I can’t remember the last time we were so busy. I have mixed feelings because it’s nice to have plenty of work coming in to keep the lights on, but not being able to take a lunch break isn’t ideal. I work weekends and my wife works weekdays and sometimes when one of us has other things to do, there’s just nowhere to leave the kids. So I took them to work with me last weekend. And as you can imagine, they were running around everywhere causing mayhem. It must have been like a wonderland for them what with all the factory gear around. We have these aluminium ute trays on our work vehicles which they were jumping amongst. It was highly dangerous of course, but nothing I said could control them.
Their energy levels began to peter out after a couple of hours. That’s when they started getting more creative than hectic. They started using old cardboard to build cubby houses around the place, using the aluminum toolboxes to prop them up. My other colleagues, who were understandably annoyed at first, found themselves quite endeared by this creativity. The kids had built this whole network of above-ground tunnels out of cardboard and aluminium toolboxes. When the guys had to use their utes we had to pull the cubbies apart but we took some photos to show their mother.
I really need to invest in a babysitter but they’re just too expensive. If only I had relatives who lived close by who could help us out from time to time. I’ve got a niece who’s about fourteen, she might be alright for the job. I could pay her a bit less than a professional babysitter cos she’s just a teenager and our relatives.
